John Barnett of JB Denison
Q: Where were you born?
A: Ottawa, Illinois
Q: When did you develop an interest in building furniture?
A: I started buying design books and subscribed to Architectural Digest in my early teens. I entertained the thought of going to design school in my twenties only to be deterred by friends of my parents. They said there would be too much competition in the market already, so I shelved my dream for a few years.
Q: What inspires you?
A: Traveling to different parts of the world that I have never been and learning about other cultures and people. I love to be outdoors, particularly in the sun.
Q: What are you most proud of?
A: Following my passion of becoming a designer and bringing joy to others.
Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?
A: Evolving my business and striving to be a better furniture designer. [I want] to listen, learn and apply lessons from others so my designs can be the best they can be.
Q: What is something most people do not know about you?
A: I’ve always thought about acting or working in the film industry. There are so many layers of the business – never static, ever-changing – I find that interesting and very exciting.
